Hazardous Waste
Many products found in your home are potentially hazardous substances. They can poison, corrode, explode, or ignite when handled improperly. When discarded in the trash, these substances are considered household hazardous waste that can threaten human and environmental health.

It is illegal to dispose of household hazardous waste (HHW) in your garbage or recycling. It must be taken to a licensed facility for treatment and recycling.
The West County Household Hazardous Waste Collection Facility (WCHHWCF) accepts household hazardous waste at its drive-through center at no charge to all residents of the RSS service area (unincorporated West Contra Costa County, Richmond, San Pablo, Pinole, Hercules, Crockett, Rodeo, Port Costa and Tormey). The Reuse Area offers free materials such as fertilizers, paint and other useful items, as well as information on alternative products less toxic to our environment.
Hazardous Waste Accepted at the WCHHWCF:
(Limited to 15 gallons or 125 lbs of total material)
- Acids & oxidizers (pool chemicals, bleaches, detergents)
- Adhesives
- Anti-freeze
- Automobile fluids
- Batteries (single-use & rechargeable)
- Car Batteries
- Chemicals
- Compact fluorescent light bulbs
- Fertilizers
- Fluorescent tubes
- Household cleaners
- Liquid & solid poisons (pesticides, cleaner,
- Mercury containing thermostats, timers, etc.
- Motor oil
- Oil Filters
- Paint & paint related products
- Pesticides
- Propane BBQ tanks less than five gallons
